HISTORY OF COOPVETS
|| HISTORY OF COOPVETS ||
Through the eyes of former COOPVETS Commander Sam Snipe (05/2005)
COOPVETS was started by a guy by the name of Russ G (aka: EXterminater) on April 1, 2000. Yes April 1st, CV was actually a bet that EX had with someone
that he couldn't actually create a team and get it off the ground (who ever that other person was; they lost the bet).
Within months of COOPVETS (CV) starting I was a newbie player in the Delta Force world of gaming - I new next to nothing about the game, except I got to shoot
people and it was a lot of fun. I spent hours online each night after work learning all the little tricks of the game and the maps in Land Warrior.
I only played COOP maps (probably because I couldn't actually hit a human moving target if someone paid me to). It was a Friday night when I happened into my
first COOPVETS server hosted by none other than TB (another one of the original members). As I played the maps with this coop team; they enjoyed their time
online, they were very friendly towards me, it was fun - so night after night went by and I played with the same team and the same guys for about 2 weeks and then
someone asked me "Hey Sam! Do you want to join COOPVETS?" (my aka at that time was Sam Snipe - Sam = send a message snipe = sniper). After a few
minutes of me asking some questions, I said yes and then they voted me in right there on the spot (back in those days; you were voted in by 3 executive officers and
they all had to say YES). Whew! I was in - I actually joined my first online team - too cool.
Within a week of being a member of COOPVETS I was chatting away with EXterminter on a daily basis; we became very good friends and in turn suggested they
should have some sort of website like other teams online had. I told him; "I can create you something cool..." Okay I really have to learn to keep my mouth shut more
often; but I enjoyed it still.
I bought the domain for coopvets.com; and then EXterminter bought the web space (host site); between the two of us we had the start of a really cool website for
CV. I went from being a grunt player to webmaster within weeks of being voted in. I was promoted quickly up the ranks in CV; grunt - Captain - General -
Commander/Owner. It happened over the span of approximately 60 days total time. I was being promoted so fast through the ranks, other members would kid
around with me and say things like "So Sam! What rank should we call you today?" At first I took it all with a grain of salt, thinking of it as just a small team of guys
and gals who like to play the same little game online. I never thought it would ever grow to be what it is today!! WOW!
EXterminter had all kinds of excellent people to choose from for the owner of CV; he said he chose me cuz I was a good listener and I didn't take any crap from
people. haha I don't know about that! The promotions I got were the fastest on record - I moved from rank to rank within weeks and was the owner and Commander of
the entire thing within months of being accepted into the group. The original member count I think was between 16 to 25 members - within a year we tripled those
numbers. Going into the 5th year running for CV and the membership has just over 300 members from 23 different countries.
Approximately one year after we were running our HTML based website; a guy by the name of Tojo joined and suggested a new format for the website (a
PHP-Nuke or CMS (Content Management System)). Tojo started to re-create CV's website with this new software package and Tojo became CV's 2nd official
webmaster, which gave me more time to spend doing Commander like things (whatever that was). Tojo was an important part of CV's history; thanks very much for
everything you did for CV Tojo.
As with all gamers, we have an un-written rule "Family first!". Tojo had school he wanted to get completed, family, etc... slowly Tojo left CV and Sam Snipe became
full time webmaster of CV with a lot of help at that time from long time member GoophyDog. I (Sam Snipe) had very little knowledge of the code used to create the
CV website - so I was faced with a serious learning curve and that learning still continues to this very day.
During my reign as CV's Commander; I also had some excellent players/friends help out with virtually every aspect of CV. I would like to take this time right now to
say thanks to them all: Scorpion, Ogre,. Sailor-Moon, Raines, TB, Carhart CowBoy, Tojo, Iron, Baron Fel, GoophyDog, Rad Dad, and every person who has ever
been a CV member - thanks to you all, it is all of you past and present who have made CV what it is today. Without the assistance from these people mentioned and
all those who have not; CV would not be what it is today. The largest online COOP Gaming team on the internet today!
I can still remember EX's words in my mind "Keep It Simple - don't get complicated" - yeah well I guess I was hearing the words, but I didn't actually listen to those
words. Oh well - it still works. This simplistic theory that EX had - it works pretty good, maybe I should try it sometime. Hear I am, going into my 5th year with CV
and I don't even own it any more - everything was transferred to my successor and good friend Turbo D. However! Commander
Turbo D doesn't know anything about being a webmaster, so he asked if I would stick around a while as webmaster for CV (and since he knows I won't say no, I said yes and here we are).
Around the time I gave up ownership of CV; I also started to inform the membership that my name is not really Sam. My real name is Greg; but for years everyone
has been calling me Sam... well now this caused quite a stir for CV. The Commanders name has been officially changed, my gawd what do I call him now?!
A lot of people just called me "Sir" (which I really hated, but understood). Here we are well past the days of Sam Snipe and I still get emails to this very day titled "Hey
Sam!!". LOL - Oh well, old habits I guess.
It was a riot while I was on the team; nowadays, I get to watch from the sidelines and just be a webmaster without the Commander owner thing getting in the way (its
nice, really nice!) Don't get me wrong here though - I still love CV as much as I did when it all started; I just have a form of respect for CV now; as do thousands of
other gamers out there.
COOPVETS has become a standard word within certain communities of gamers; you tell most in our circle that you are a member of CV and they tune in real fast.
CV is respected; honoured and is held high up with those who have put their all into it. I have personally met 100's of new friends throughout the world today from
virtually every country. COOPVETS is more than just a game - its a way of life online!
